Happy Spring - of sorts, for those who aren’t still battling the chilly evenings!
It’s been busy times at ScriptWright HQ. We recently held another of our popular story surgeries at the London Independent Film Festival, using it as a platform to launch our first online masterclass, titled ‘Becoming Unstuck: Redrafting and Recrafting Your Script.’ More on both below!
We’ll also give a shout-out to some ScriptWright alumnus whose scripts have gone on to the next stage, and highlight some exciting new services we’ll be offering this year.
ScriptWright co-founder Maddy gives her thoughts on the SW blog, ‘SW Thinks,’ about what makes great dialogue, while any readers wondering what to watch next might find inspiration from what’s on Maddy and Owen’s radar at the moment.
As always, get in touch at hello@scriptwrightlondon.com to find out how we can help your writing flourish!
London Independent Film Festival
In April Maddy led a ‘Story Surgery’ workshop at the London Independent Film Festival for the second year in a row. Like last year, it was a hugely enjoyable event with some great responses from the audience. Unlike last year, Owen was sadly not there due to illness. However, he was very present in spirit!
Check out the video of the event below. Thanks to Salem Ghassan Hanna for filming!
Online workshop
We’ll be rolling out more story surgeries at future film festivals - but if you can’t wait until then, we’ll be holding our first online workshop on 5th July. Titled ‘Becoming Unstuck: Redrafting and Recrafting your Script,’ it only costs £5 to attend and is aimed at anyone with a second draft in hand who feels like their writing has stalled. Check out the link here. We’d love to see you there!
ScriptWright success stories
One of the most satisfying things about what we do is getting to see the people we work with make their writing soar. Therefore we thought we’d give a shout-out to some great ScriptWright alumni.
Meade Conway’s play ‘The Games We Play’ was a winner at the Spring 2023 Scriptwriters & Co Scratch Night, going on to be performed over Zoom. Look for his name further down.
With kind permission from Meade, the link is here for anyone who would like to watch it.
Emma McGordon’s play ‘Spoken’ secured arts council funding to be turned into an audio drama for the Rose Hill Theatre in Whitehaven, Cumbria. Read all about her exciting hunt to find the right actors here.
New blog post
ScriptWright co-founder Maddy Fry examines what exactly makes good dialogue, and how budding writers can avoid common pitfalls when putting words in the mouths of their characters. Read it on the SW blog here.
Upcoming writer resources
As well as our workshops and suite of writer support packages, we will soon be offering other forms of creative coaching, including planning methods for how to break into the industry and script reading circles for anyone who wants to see their work performed live. Keep an eye on our social media channels and website to learn more!
